WBZ Cares: Cradles to Crayons Achieves a Major Milestone

BOSTON (CBS) — The WBZ Cares Campaign lasts for the month of September.

Monthly, WBZ Newsradio 1030 highlights a worthy nonprofit organization   and tells the story of what it does for its community.

For this month of September, WBZ profiles “Cradles to Crayons”, a Boston-based organization which provides kids from birth through age 12 with essential items — clothing shoes, school supplies and toys — they need to thrive at home, at school, and at play. There are over 300,000 children ages 0-12 that live in low-income situations in Massachusetts.

Cradles to Crayons has been set up by CEO Lynn Margherio in 2002, and since that time, the business has branched out, and now they will hit a one-million landmark. “Over the span of this 14-years we’ve been in operation, and in the years we’ve been in operation in Philadelphia, and only launched in Chicago, those communities will allow us to serve one million kids,” said Margherio.

However, Margherio says while this is going to be a major accomplishment, there are countless more kids who want help. “While we’re really excited about the million landmark, a part of what we will be doing with this is saying that there are more kids out there to assist,” Margherio stated.

Meantime, Cradles to Crayons continues to plan among the largest fundraisers of the year. It’s known as the “Un-Gala”. Senior Manager of Development Dave Catungno clarifies the name. “You watch CEO’s in panties and T-shirts, you see the Patriots’ mascot running about, pushing “Lucky the Leprechaun” in a rolling bin,” Catungno stated. “It’s really an enjoyable surroundings, comfy, you bring your children, we’ve got a scavenger hunt — it’s just a really enjoyable place to find out about the job Cradles to Crayons is performing locally.”

It’s a fun party, but it has a serious mission. “Our intention is to raise a million bucks,” Cotungno stated. “And during those attempts serve about 40,000 kids this winter with brand-new coats and warm clothing, and that’s 5,000 more kids than we served annually.”
